In the same way that surfing is about being in tune with the waves, skateboarding is about being in tune with the pavement. However, the company
COMET Skateboards takes it one step further by getting in touch with it's eco-friendly roots.
The company is in a constant search for the newest and latest design to keep the sky above your head and your wheels under your feet. "It's all about meeting the demands of an unrelenting environment and the skater who is part of it," proclaims their website. Apparently so much so that they host links of eco-friendly sites all throughout their pages.
Their boards are made from completely sustainable bamboo, maple veneer, vert-lam poplar, and hickory cores. They include carbon fiber, triaxal fiberglass cloths, polyvinyl glues, toughened epoxy, and water based paints. COMET Skateboards works "with companies worldwide to assist in developing 'Green' BIO BASED expoxies, reinforcements, and coatings for the future."
The boards are individually pressed to let the glue seep deeper into the pores of the wood. After they cool, they contract and stiffen to ensure long lasting use. "Heat and pressure allow us to bend and load our core materials yielding specific flex patterns. This keeps you from breaking boards the week you buy them and allows every COMET board to feel like the day you got it for its' whole life."
Their precision cutting adds to the experience, allowing perfect shapes, straight holes "and workers with all of their fingers." The types of boards cut by this machine include the Proflex, Classic/Speed, and Comtop. The website announces that the machine that does the cutting has run completely on solar power since November of 2004.
Their non-toxic finish contains 65% solvents which saves millions of tons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from being pumped into the atmosphere. "VOCs accelerate the effects of global warming and are extremely dangerous to workers. Several companies world-wide are working to stop the use of these unnecessary compounds. COMET is one of them. Check for a different smell when you open your COMET board." Jokingly, the website adds, "Those of you who like the smell of solvents, don't worry, we are still down with a can of spray paint."
